On May 6, Hapag Lloyd had announced that few crew members aboard the containership MV ITAL LIBERA 065E, while sailing from Durban to Asia, were tested positive for COVID-19. Shortly thereafter, under unfortunate circumstances, the captain of the vessel passed away. Upon reaching Asia, the vessel was denied entry at the ports and as a safety measure was anchored at the Port of Jakarta to undergo a 14-day quarantine.
In a recent update posted on June 7, Hapag Lloyd has further informed that force majeure has been declared and due to no Asian ports accepting the vessel, she has now been diverted to call Italy first in order to repatriate the captain.
The Ital Libera will now sail to Italy before continuing its voyage in Asia with the dates currently unknown.
